The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project (NESFP) is a non-profit partnership that assists immigrants and others with agricultural experience to apply their skills in their new environment and become commercial farmers. Currently the project supports 36 farmers of Southeast Asian, West African and Latino origins on farm sites in Dracut Massachusetts. NESFP provides services such as locating farmland, education, training, business/enterprise development, and production and marketing assistance. Funded entirely by grants and donations, the project provides opportunities for economically disadvantaged farmers, preserves farmland, and promotes New England agriculture.
The Agriculture, Food and Environment Program of the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University initiated NESFP and the project continues to be an integral part of the school’s academic program. NESFP provides opportunities for student involvement via internships, directed study, and research, while AFE faculty foster curriculum connections in class discussions and coursework. Community Teamwork, Inc. ("CTI"), a community action organization located in Lowell, MA, is the fiscal sponsor of the organization.
NESFP staff are employees of Tufts University, and CTI. Project partners include federal and state government agencies, universities, foundations, local farmers, and multiple community-based organizations. People in the surrounding communities support NESFP by purchasing farm products and are proud to see the project headlined in local, national and international media stories.
